Unit B: Internet and search engines

What you learn

The aim of the training unit is to provide the “grandparents” the autonomous ability to fulfil the following tasks (provided that they have a turned on PC with an active internet connection and the browser Explorer installed on it):

 

• To connect to a search engine or to a web directory
• To search websites and information within typical classification of web directories
• To search websites and information by means of search engines, and analyze the proposed outputs
• To use Wikipedia, the biggest encyclopaedia of the web

 

Moreover, the following cases will be considered by performing some training exercises:

 

• Addresses and characteristics of main search engines
• To search websites and documents by means of the Google/Yahoo directory
• To search websites and documents by using the Google “simple search”
• To search websites and documents by using the Google “advanced search” 
• How browse a website without getting lost: forward and backward buttons, the chronology and “favorites” functions
• To search information within Wikipedia

 

Operative details

The training unit will be essentially devoted to practical exercises. Moreover, in order to understand all the possibilities offered by the browser, some theoretical explanations will be also provided. This is useful to understand those functions that will not be possible to test during the lessons.

The “grandparents” will be asked to use the browser, navigating within the pages of the GYM of the G&G project. Those pages are specifically developed in order to allow the training on searching information on Google and/or Yahoo search engines. Moreover we propose the use of the wikipedia webpage.
The “grandsonschildren", guided and assisted by the grandson.
